Gus’ Story
Gus is a sweet little girl, she’s been with us for a long time and we got her when she was only a few days old. Her mother Mindy gave birth beside a playground. It wasn’t long before kids learned that there was a nest of baby rabbits. Neighbours told us kids were taking the babies out of the nest and playing with them on the playground. Rabbits, especially newborn kits, are extremely fragile. It is also dangerous for them to be separated from their litter mates as they aren’t yet capable of regulating their body temperature and can easily get cold and die. The neighbours who were trying to deter kids away from the nest were worried the babies had died, as Mindy completely covered up the opening to the nest. After a little digging, WRRR was successfully able to rescue all 7 kits as well as Mindy on the same day.
Gus was adopted from us last year, but was unfortunately returned when the owner developed terrible allergies.
Her current foster says that overall, Gus is a very easy bunny to take care of. Gus is easy to keep contained because she never leaves her soft area to venture on hardwood. With the right set-up (assuming you have hard floors) she doesn’t even require a fence to keep her contained. Gus loves to chew on sticks and cardboard, that being said she needs a bunny proofed area to keep her from chewing furniture and other human-things. Bunnies’ teeth are constantly growing, so it makes sense why Gus is an active chewer! With enough enrichment and hay, her habit will be manageable. Gus is 100% litter-trained, but she will pee on plushy things like beds, so it’s best to stick with blankets in her area. It is important that her litter box is regularly changed (at least every other day) as if it’s dirty she will sometimes pee outside of it as protest. Gus is very friendly, but as a prey-animal dislikes being picked up. She loves being pet, especially on her nose. Gus does good in a home with other animals and would be even happier if she had a bunny-friend to bond with. Her foster says Gus is an absolute sweetheart and doesn’t need much except a clean area with lots of enrichment.
